Drupal or WordPress as a CMS, comparison
Primary tabs
WordPress is the slim fast Drupal. For more than three years now I have been actively working with Drupal. I programmed some very bad things but also some very good ones. I would say that I know Drupal. Since I have now, however, withdrew from the developer community, I wanted a blogging system that is simple and just blogging and not much need maintenance. WordPress. Hopefully.
Hosted solution
Easiest way to run a blog is when you can host it. I've also looked at some services, including Blogger (Google), Drupal Gardens (Acquia) and WordPress. Bloggers like me simply do not per se. Drupal Gardens is actually very pretty and I like it very well, but is very slow in the backend. I think the guys are working on it. It was just kinda funny not really work with it. WordPress.com has fallen to me excellent, but the conditions have comic regarding advertising. So I've decided to host wordpress myself.
Advantages of WordPress
WordPress looks very pretty
There is an enormous selection of attractive themes for WordPress. Sorry, but there can not really keep up with Drupal
If one WordPress and Drupal on a scale, then WordPress is playing in the flyweight class would Drupal is in the heavyweight (WordPress has the default installation for 12 tables in the database, Drupal 55)
WordPress has everything you need for easy set Blogging: categories, tags, auto save, schedule publishing, nice dashboard, spam protection, themes pretty, very nice wysiwyg editor. Without additionally to install anything.
There's even an app for Android WordPress, where you can easily write and edit posts
But some credit for WordPress. This is probably the reason why WordPress is so popular. Anyone can blog. What unfortunately Drupal out of the box is not quite the case. WordPress also has a few quirks:
Quirks of WordPress
Plugin stability and consistency. Sorry, but I've installed a few plugins that have just produced a white page. And then there is anywhere in the module configuration pages that "PayPal Donate" buttons ... annoying.
Plugins and themes are scattered everywhere. Is somehow also not always very trustworthy, somewhat of downloading from any site and install.
The code. Since I shudder. The Theme templates remind me of my bad Drupal themes. As designers, we must not shy away from PHP code
Strict separation of design and logic is being violated. My current theme has some very cool features, which are tied to the theme. Thus, there are themes, which will take care of SEO, which determines bring pre-fabricated blocks and make everything else in the background ... which in turn is a strength because it allows him to make beautiful themes.
Drupal Power
Drupal is an extremely powerful framework:
Super community. Modules are almost exclusively available on Drupal.org. Advertising in the modules is really taboo. Development workflow is standardized and Simple tests are also given guidelines for quality control.
Extremely flexible. The hook system may sound intimidating, but ultra-flexible. Hacking code is excluded by almost ...:). Modules like CCK and Views provide additional flexibility.
Theme Layer with Preprocess functions is very transparent and makes clear and clean template files.
Large number of high quality modules. There are always new and innovative ideas that result in a module
The dark side of Drupal
Out of the box, there is very little and very ugly, though it is increasingly possible with the appropriate profiles, and will hopefully improve even more with Drupal 8. With open atrium, OpenPublish ManagingNews and there are some extremely good products. I'm pretty amazed when I first installed the open atrium.
Themes. Out of the box you will hardly find appealing themes. They exist, but they are manageable
Complexity. Drupal in terms of resources is not just a penny pincher. In the DB tables are neatly laid out and well regarding memory consumption must take into account some one.
So, WordPress or Drupal?
It depends. I'm here now, my blog on WordPress, and am really happy and invested relatively little time and if I ever feel to have a different theme, then that's no problem finding something suitable. To build a "right" side, with their own ideas and imagination, where I keep my system defaults to not have to, I would however prefer to do with Drupal. The fun factor is definitely higher.
"Standing on the Shoulder of Giants". Drupal is definitely such a giant (Giant). Sometimes it is not appropriate, and to crawl up a wormhole even more complicated since you first must ascend the excavator.
A look outside the box is worth
The last 3.5 years I was very focused on Drupal. To some extent this is justified, because in order to penetrate into the depths of Drupal (and some modules, like CCK and Views) time is necessary. A day has only 24 h. However,
A look outside the box, however, shows that there are other good systems. It does not need a black / white glasses. Different systems can coexist. I have nothing against WordPress. The same with operating systems. During the last 1.5 years I thought Linux was exactly the right system as Drupalentwickler. If however, I will do in the future more office stuff, I think Windows is probably more appropriate. Every (or certainly many) tools have their niche.
So there are "Drupalianer We are the best, the others are nothing," we learn from each other. Take the good things in Drupal WordPress and WordPress purely in turn can be merely observing some of Drupal.
